The Kamlet Reichert Advantage Clerkship— A Diversity Clerking and Mentoring Program for Law School Recruits
Program Overview Kamlet Reichert, LLP, in partnership with the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, has launched one of the most cutting-edge and innovative programs for diverse law students in the nation. The program, called the Kamlet Reichert Advantage Clerkship, provides a diverse student who has applied to the University of Denver Sturm College of Law tangible support and a strong mentoring network of attorneys—before they even begin their first year of classes—and continues throughout law school years and beyond.
Open to all diverse students applying to the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, candidates from across the nation are prescreened by the University, according to a set of criteria including:
- Strong academic performance
- Prior employment or significant volunteer work demonstrating familiarity with business environments and executive maturity
- Strong LSAT scores
- A diverse background
Top candidates meeting the criteria are directed to Kamlet Reichert for interviews. A finalist is chosen prior to the student starting his or her first year of Law School at the University of Denver. No separate application is required for this program.
The Kamlet Reichert Advantage Clerkship program is unique since it directly addresses many of the hurdles that prevent diverse law school applicants from attending and completing law school in Colorado and then staying to work in the Colorado law community. This program:
- Encourages diverse law school candidates to come to Colorado for law school by providing an important anchoring network of mentors from the moment the student arrives in Colorado
- Gives a diverse candidate a source of income and valuable legal experience during his/her first year summer to encourage and enable the candidate to complete law school in Colorado
- Provides a practical tool to improve mentoring of diverse attorneys, including developing relationship skills, interpolitical skills and substantive legal skills
- Ultimately increases the number of diverse attorneys in Colorado
Program Details
Year One—Mentoring Upon beginning classes at the University of Denver, the chosen student will immediately begin their affiliation with Kamlet Reichert. The selected student will have the opportunity to be mentored by the entire Kamlet Reichert team—from managing partners to associates. They will be included in firm correspondence, invited to firm events, attend a monthly attorney meeting in the Fall and Spring semesters, talk to the lawyers and receive access to all firm resources, including the library, research books and publications.
Year Two—Clerkship After the successful completion of the first year of law school, the student will begin a 10-week paid summer associate position, providing not only income, but additional mentoring, valuable law office experience and opportunities to participate in Colorado activities. As part of this paid 10-week position, Summer Associates will receive:
- Challenging work experiences with a variety of regional, national and Fortune 500 companies
- The opportunity to enhance research and writing skills through work on key client projects
- Hands-on responsibilities in our core practice groups of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, Corporate and Securities, Real Estate and Project Finance, Litigation, and Communications, Internet and Intellectual Property
